MPT-1. Gather Required Information
1.1. Obtain Network Diagramsβ
Just ask for them
- The simplest yet most important thing that can be done during planning is directly asking for network diagrams and asset lists β it should be assumed that they are not accurate or outdated, but is a better starting point than from nothing
- Most DOD network enclaves have authorization and accreditation packages stored in eMASS (Enterprise Mission Assurance Support Service) β the network owner must be contacted in order to gain access to their information in eMASS
No network diagrams available?
In the worst-case scenario where there are no network diagrams, it may be necessary to piece together information from the following to develop your own network diagram to work from:
- Network Infrastructure Configs: Analyze network infrastructure (routers, switches, firewalls, etc.) configuration exports to manually transcribe a visual representation of network links
- Network Discovery Scanning: Starting from the known outer-boundary, connect to multiple points of the network during ADVON or early execution (preferably ADVON) and performing discovery scans of known networks to gain a better understanding of the network
- Network Traffic Sampling: Starting from the known outer-boundary, connect temporarily install network sensors during ADVON or early execution (preferably ADVON) to collect samples of traffic to analyze and gain a better understanding of the network
